Traveling alone in India

I am 22 years old female traveling to India for three months.I have done some traveling in Africa and other countries but will be my first long trip by myself. I am trying to find the best way to backpack across India. I am very interested in the natural beauty of the country but also the overal culture. The Big cities would be interesting but not the big draw. I was wondering how hard it is too find houseing why you are traveling. I feel like this is one of my biggest concerns being stuck in an area and having a place to sleep and if I can't find a place to sleep where would be the safest place to hang out.
